What's Frank hiding in his Ocean?
2012 was a huge year for Frank Ocean.
Previously known as one of the 97+ members of Odd future, he is now
considered an artist in his own right with stand out performances on Saturday Night Live and the VMA awards. The first time I heard Frank was
on the Watch The Throne album. His co-labs with Jay and Ye stood out
and subsequently 'No Church in the Wild' was selected by Luhrmann as
the leading song for the period drama 'The Great Gatsby'. I mean if
Luhrmann is behind it, then that shit must be good.
Ocean is talented and would appear to
have earned his place as one of the top artists of 2012, but did he
play fair to get there? Call me cynical but was his admission of falling in love with a man real
or a clever public stunt?
While Frank has said that he cried like a baby when he posted his tumblr letter (F.Y.I tumblr is the new post system of the 21st century), in which he explicitly detailed how he fell in love with a man, he's never actually said that he was gay or straight or owned up to any sexual orientation specifically, and therefore he became more interesting than ever.
Years and years ago (like in 2002) everything a musician did was
dictated by their management, but here in the 21st century
they've gone rogue. I like Frank, I like his music and I freaking
love his head band. But was there a need to
catapult himself into the headlines with his admission of homo-tendencies? Was it genuine or a marketing ploy?
Ocean's are deep and I think there
might be a lot more to Frank than we realise. He survived Katrina for
crying out loud!
Hipsterly yours
